Andrea Yates

Andrea Yates was 37, living in Texas and married to Rusty Yates when she murdered their 5 children in 2001. Her father passed away in 2001, but her mother and brothers were in attendance at the trial. Andrea drowned her 5 children (4 sons and a daughter) because “she had failed them as a mother.” She was concerned they would be “tormented by Satan,” if she hadn’t killed them. She claimed that after she drowned the children all the demons tormenting her at the time of the incident had now left her body. Andrea said that the devil “destroys and then leaves.” After drowning each child one at a time, in their own bathtub, she then lined them up on the bed, starting to feel remorse for what she had done. Andrea suffered from post partum depression and psychosis.
A Harris County jury convicts Yates of two counts of capital murder in the deaths of Noah, John and Mary. She was not tried in the deaths of Paul and Luke. She is later sentenced to life in prison. On January 6, 2005, The Texas First Court of Appeals reverses Andrea Yates' capital murder conviction saying that erroneous testimony by psychiatrist Park Dietz may have prejudiced the jury. She was lateredfound not guilty by reason of insanity and is ordered to a mental hospital.
As of January, 2007, Yates was transferred from North Texas State Hospital Vernon Campus to the Kerrville State Hospital in Kerrville, Texas, where she currently resides.
